VALLEY RESIDENTS URGE KROEKER FOR LAPD CHIEF.

Valley, southern California, U.S. Northwest of central Los Angeles, the valley is bounded by the San Gabriel, Santa Susana, and Santa Monica mountains and the Simi Hills.
 residents said during a special meeting Thursday.

But, mostly, they said the chief should be Mark Kroeker, the former Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  police deputy chief and now Portland's top cop.

``The police don't work for him - they work with him,'' said Ann Kinzle of Reseda, ``and they solve the problems. That's who we want for chief.''

Most of the other 25 speakers echoed Kinzle's sentiment.

 and the Police Commission they wanted to make sure they pick a chief who's fair and accessible to the community.

Thursday's meeting at Valley Presbyterian Hospital Presbyterian Hospital can refer to several places:
  • New York-Presbyterian Hospital, a hospital in New York City
  • Presbyterian Hospital (Charlotte), a hospital in Charlotte, North Carolina
  • Presbyterian Hospital (Albuquerque), a hospital in Albuquerque, New Mexico
 was the third public meeting held throughout the city to allow the Police Commission to gather public opinion about the next new police chief. The commission was represented by Commissioner Bert Boeckmann.

Police Commission Executive Director Joe Gunn said that at the first meetings in Watts Watts, residential section of south central Los Angeles. Named after C. H. Watts, a Pasadena realtor, the section became part of Los Angeles in 1926. Artist Simon Rodia's celebrated Watts Towers are there.  and Hollywood residents also voiced not only their criteria for the new chief, but those they thought would fit the bill.

``What they're doing is offering up a choice,'' Gunn said.

Kroeker is among a handful of current and former LAPD deputy chiefs and commanders who have said they will apply for the job.

Police Chief Bernard Parks retired last month, shortly after the Police Commission voted to deny him a second five-year term. Parks is now planning to run for the 8th City Council seat currently held by Mark Ridley-Thomas Mark Ridley-Thomas (born 1954) is currently a California State Senate where he chairs the Business, Professions and Economic Development Committee]]. He represents the 26th district which includes the communities of Vermont Knolls, Jefferson Park, Leimert Park, Hancock Park, Korean , who is termed out.

When police commissioners chose not to support Parks, they said it was because he lacked a commitment to reform and community policing. Those have become two of the more important issues in the search for Parks' replacement.

The Police Commission's public meetings will continue until the end of the month. The next one is scheduled for next week in Wilmington.

Two additional meetings - in Boyle Heights on June 19 and in Westchester on June 26 - were added to the scheduled five due to community interest.

The final meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on June 27 at Occidental College History
