A day after Genevieve Alice Shuman was hit by a car and killed, relatives and neighbors mourned Saturday for the quiet, independent lady.

``She was lovely. The sweetest person in the world,'' said Celia Snyder, Shuman's longtime long·time

At about 5 p.m. Saturday, a woman in her 40s was hit as she crossed at the 24500 block of Stagg Street in Canoga Park, officials said.

Two of the three dogs that the woman had been walking were hit and killed in the accident, and the woman, whose name was not released, was taken to West Hills Medical Center with critical injuries.

Unlike Shuman, the victim Saturday was not in a marked crosswalk, Wells said.

Shuman, 82, was crossing west on Etiwanda Street at Oxnard Street to drop two letters in the corner mailbox A simulated mailbox in the computer that holds e-mail messages. The driver of the car, David Contract, 47, of Tarzana apparently stopped at the red light and was just beginning a right turn when he hit Shuman, said Officer Norman Nagengast, of the LAPD's Valley Traffic Division.

Shuman suffered head injuries and died three hours later at Tarzana Hospital.

Contract was not cited. Police said the incident is being investigated.

Shuman's neighbors said they had felt more secure about the intersection intersection /in·ter·sec·tion/ (-sek´shun) a site at which one structure crosses another.

``It's a very dangerous corner,'' said Snyder, who has lived in the complex 22 years. ``There are a lot of accidents.''

Shuman was retired from a nursing career that began more than 50 years ago and included a stint as a captain in the Army nurse corps in World War II.

``Being a nurse, anytime there was something to be done, she was there,'' said Shuman of Sherman Oaks.

``She loved to walk,'' said Margaret Bromiley, 80.
