VALLEY GROUP AIMING FOR CANTER RECALL SCHOOL PLANS UNDER ATTACK.

Byline: Jennifer Radcliffe Staff Writer

A group of Woodland Hills residents launched an effort this week to recall LAUSD LAUSD Los Angeles Unified School District (Los Angeles, CA)  board member Marlene Canter, saying she has broken promises to build more neighborhood schools.

The group's main complaint is Canter's support of a plan to reopen the former Hughes Middle School Hughes Middle School is the name of many middle schools, including:

Only the New York City Department of Education has a larger student population.  students would be bused to the campus daily, which recall organizer Patty Patano said would cause traffic and crime problems.

``I think the mistake Marlene made was not taking us seriously from the outset,'' said Patano, who heads a group called Kids First. ``The promises over and over again are community schools and no busing. What are we getting? A magnet school ... and busing.''

Canter defended her performance, saying she's taken neighborhood concerns seriously.

``We've built a strong working relationship,'' she said. ``I will continue to work with the community until we have a strong project that benefits both the community and the students.''

Kids First took the first two steps in the recall process Thursday by publishing the legal notice of the intent to recall and mailing the paperwork to the City Clerk's Office. Canter has 14 days to file a written response.

Kids First then will have 120 days to collect more than 50,000 signatures from registered voters in Canter's district, which includes parts of the San Fernando Valley San Fernando Valley

A recall election could be held as early as November if the group gets enough valid signatures.
