VALLEY GETS SHOW-BIZ BREAK; PAX NETWORK DEBUT SET : LIVE SHOW TO AIR AUG. 31 FROM UNIVERSAL STUDIOS.Byline: Dave McNary Daily News Staff Writer By the end of this month, Americans will have a new view of the San Fernando Valley San Fernando Valley Valley, southern California, U.S. Northwest of central Los Angeles, the valley is bounded by the San Gabriel, Santa Susana, and Santa Monica mountains and the Simi Hills. : from their living rooms. When Pax Network launches the nation's seventh TV network at noon Aug. 31, it will be with a sweeping view of the Valley and the proclamation ``Live from Universal Studios Hollywood.'' And thus will begin ``Great Day America,'' the family-oriented Pax Network's first show - a feel-good spin on entertainment, current events and upbeat ``news use you can use'' such as cooking demonstrations, personal finance and home improvement. To make its first show a go, Pax is scrambling to convert the Roman Noodle restaurant - which was serving meals as recently as last weekend - into a TV studio. Its key feature will be two large glass walls that allow park visitors to peer in during tapings. The show's look has been designed to evoke the feel of NBC's ``Today'' show, with its signature location on the corner of the ground floor of New York New York, state, United States New York, Middle Atlantic state of the United States. It is bordered by Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and the Atlantic Ocean (E), New Jersey and Pennsylvania (S), Lakes Erie and Ontario and the Canadian province of City's Rockefeller Center Rockefeller Center, complex of buildings in central Manhattan, New York City, between 48th and 51st streets and Fifth Ave. and the Ave. of the Americas (Sixth Ave.). The project was sponsored by John D. Rockefeller, Jr. , said producer and co-host Michael Young. The main interview set of ``Great Day America'' will be backed by a panoramic view of the Valley. Shows, which will start with a rooftop shot of the ``Great Day America'' studio with the Valley in the background, will likely draw as many as 500 park visitors outside the TV studio. The audio portion of the broadcast will be piped outdoors. ``We think Universal is the perfect location,'' Young said. ``It's right in the middle of where everyone lives in Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850. and it's a place that attracts a lot of families on vacation, so it's not going to be strictly people from Los Angeles The following is a list of notable people whom were born in, residents of, or otherwise closely associated with the city of Los Angeles, California. Pax's new studio underscores the continuing boom in the Valley specifically and the Los Angeles region generally, said Stephanie Hershey-Liner, vice president of the Entertainment Industry Development Corp. ``We've seen a lot of new production space in former warehouses, but this is the first time I recall that anyone's converted a restaurant,'' she said. ``Every studio's been expanding.'' On Monday, work began on converting the dining area to the three sets - an interview area, a demonstration set and the anchor desk. Roman Noodle's serving line will be used for the waiting area, or green room, and dressing room, while the kitchen will become the control room. After its opening day special Aug. 31, ``Great Day America'' will air live at 5 p.m. on the East Coast and 4 p.m. in the Central time zone, and will be rebroadcast at 5 p.m. on the West Coast with occasional live inserts. ``We think there's a significant audience at that time of day that does not want blood and guts,'' Young said. ``One of our slogans is `We'll tell you what's right with the world.' '' Pax founder Lowell ``Bud'' Paxson has pledged that the network, which will be made up mostly of stations now broadcasting infomercials, will be free of ``excessive violence and gratuitous sex.'' Pax, part of Paxson Communications Corp., will launch with 88 TV stations covering 70 percent of the nation's markets. Locally, the network will air on the Channel 30 slot on many cable systems with wholesome fare such as reruns of ``Dave's World,'' ``Touched by an Angel'' and ``Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman'' and original programming such as ``Flipper: The New Adventures'' and ``It's a Miracle It's a Miracle was a television show that aired on PAX-TV (now Independent Television) between September 6, 1998 and September 1, 2004.[1] Initially hosted by Richard Thomas[2], and later by Roma Downey, [3] .'' ``Great Day America,'' which will air for an hour each day, will be going up mostly against newscasts. ``I would hope that we can establish ourselves as being the pre-eminent family channel, much like MTV MTV in full Music Television U.S. cable television network, established in 1980 to present videos of musicians and singers performing new rock music. He has promised that Pax will be profitable within four months. Young, a broadcast veteran who won an Emmy for ABC's ``Kids Are People Too,'' proposed the idea for ``Great Day America'' to Paxson in January at a launch party for Pax in Florida. ``I told him, `You need a show like this to reflect the personality of the network,' '' Young recalled. ``The format that we're using is tried and true,'' he added. ``We know that people want information given in a way that feels comfortable and familiar.'' Originally, Young planned to broadcast from the Universal CityWalk entertainment center next to the theme park, but Universal officials suggested Roman Noodle might offer a better solution if Pax could wait until late summer. The move to build the studio, which will employ about 30 people, will add to Universal's position as the largest home to production space in the entertainment industry. The studio already operates 36 stages with 370,000 square feet. Projects such as ``Great Day America'' have helped maintain entertainment production at impressive levels. A recent study by the Economic Alliance of the San Fernando Valley showed a 30 percent gain between 1992 and 1996 in entertainment production spending in the Valley, to $6.44 billion, and demand for more programming is spurring the construction of additional production space. ``The entertainment industry continues to be an important component of the economy,'' said Steve Lew, a Universal executive and an alliance board member. ``The need for more production helps to create more jobs.''
