A longtime critic of the Bush administration's policy toward Iran, Sherman on Tuesday vowed to use his position to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons.

``Preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons should be the primary objective of American foreign policy,'' he said in a statement.

Rep. Howard Berman, D-Van Nuys, meanwhile, will take the helm of a panel close to the heart of Hollywood: the House Judiciary Subcommittee on the Courts, Internet and Intellectual Property.

The author of a number of bills aimed at strengthening the Motion Picture Association of America's hand in combating piracy and copyright theft, Berman is expected to be a strong advocate for the entertainment industry in the new position.

Cathy Sloan, spokeswoman for the Computer and Communications Industry Association, which often is at odds with the entertainment industry over intellectual property issues, offered praise for Berman.

``He certainly is going to be most supportive of the content industry because that's who he represents in Congress, but we know that we can work with him on any issue,'' she said.

Sherman also will be serving on the House Judiciary Committee this year, as will Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Pasadena. Both vowed to make intellectual property a top priority.

Berman also will serve as one of the most senior members on the Foreign Affairs Committee See also United States Senate Committee on Foreign Relations
