The Robinsons-May store was converted into a Macy's Men and Home Store on September 9, 2006. , and officials announced 18 new retail tenants for the $300 million mall.

The 600,000-square-foot mall, under construction on 129 acres north of Highway 118 between First Street and Erringer Road, is the first regional center built in Ventura County in more than 25 years.

The mall is set to open Oct. 27, and the 500-unit luxury apartment complex, also part of the plan, is due to be completed in April 2006.

``It's different,'' said general manager Greg M. Lenners, as he led a tour Thursday of the project site. ``It's a complete other animal. There is nothing to compare it to. It's got its own unique style.''

Officials announced 18 new tenants joining the shopping center shopping center, a concentration of retail, service, and entertainment enterprises designed to serve the surrounding region. Construction workers also broke ground on the three-story apartment community to be named Jefferson at Simi Valley. Currently, there are 1,500 workers at the construction site, but that number will double to 3,000 in the coming weeks.

The mixed-use project spans 1.5 million square feet, including more than 120 stores, six sit-down restaurants, a home-improvement section and apartments on the hillside.

City leaders have envisioned the project for decades with failed attempts to woo major retailers to Simi Valley.

``There were a lot of years when we didn't always get the quality that we thought we deserved as a community,'' said Councilman Glen Becerra. ``We're getting everything and more.''

Thus far, 80 tenants have committed to leases. And officials anticipate 85 percent occupancy once the mall opens.

The open-air retail center will be anchored by a Macy's and Robinsons May. There is additional room for a third anchor because the center could expand by 200,000 square feet.

``It will be quite an amenity for the city,'' said Mayor Paul Miller The name Paul Miller is shared by a number of people.
