``New Year's Eve has turned into a time, especially since 9-11, for families to stay home together,'' said Kathie Mathis, executive director of the center. ``Knowing that, we thought since the Bootlegger's Ball has been around for a while, we wanted to take the fun of New Year's Eve and add it to the romance of Valentine's Day Valentine's Day: see Saint Valentine's Day.

The center is beginning a new fund-raiser on Feb. 14 at the Hyatt Valencia that will feature dinner and dancing to a live band.

``It's for couples and lovers and singles hoping to find lovers; an evening of romance,'' Mathis said. ``What better way to show love for each other and love for those in need?''

Event organizer and center board member Stella Pilarski said she's excited to have already received a call about the Valentine's event. Mathis said that while contracts are in place for the coming year, the organization has been informed that budget cuts will hit it in the next cycle.

``There have been several million dollars taken out of the Victims of Crime Act funds by the federal government,'' she said. ``That trickles down to the state level and eventually gets to us.''

Mathis said that other fund-raisers are planned in the coming months, including a golf tournament in April and a Mother's Day luncheon in May that will help cover some of the anticipated deficits.
