VALENTINE'S VOICES; CHORALES' CONCERTS TO OFFER SOUNDS OF ROMANCE.

Byline: P. Catherine Shanks Community Columnist

The Los Robles Robles is a common surname in the Spanish language meaning oaks, and may refer to:
  • Alfonso GarcĂa Robles (1911-1991), Mexican diplomat and politician
  • Aurora Robles (born 1980), Mexican fashion model
  • Charlie Robles (born 1943), Puerto Rican musician
and Ventura County Master Chorale chorale (kōrăl`, –räl`), any of the traditional hymns of the German Protestant Church. The form was developed after the Reformation to replace the plainsong of the earlier service and as a means of congregational participation in  groups will entertain audiences countywide this weekend, with their respective musical Valentine performances.

On Saturday and Sunday, the Ventura County Master Chorale's MasterSingers and chamber orchestra Noun 1. chamber orchestra - small orchestra; usually plays classical music

will present a delectable program of classical French music.

Also on Sunday, the Los Robles Master Chorale will perform a few sets of lighter delights from the American musical theater.

``The music is romantic as in `love stuff,' not as in Brahms,'' said Los Robles baritone John Ross Nelson. Nelson plays a Nelson Eddy equivalent to his Jeanette MacDonald, soprano Lynn Youngren.

Nelson, who develops weapons software for naval aircraft by day, enjoys temporarily leaving thoughts of war and armaments behind to sing of love. While driving from work to rehearsal, the baritone shifts mental gears and makes his transition from computer person to the characters he portrays in song.

A highly trained, seasoned musician, Nelson is most familiar with the classical repertoire. This concert, comprising old favorites and well-known selections from musicals, represents a stylistic departure for the singer.

``We're singing a big bag of chestnuts,'' said Nelson.Youngren said she thinks the Los Robles Master Chorale audience will respond favorably and emotionally to the litany of tunes suitable for humming.

The Los Robles program reads like a musical review: ``My Funny Valentine,'' ``Embraceable You,'' ``Make Believe,'' and ``If I Loved You'' keep company with ``If Ever I Would Leave You,'' ``Dulcinea,'' ``Memory'' and a host of other showstoppers.

Wilbur Skeels is Los Robles Master Chorale assistant director and principal accompanist. Skeels has created a special arrangement of the song, ``Tonight,'' from ``West Side Story.''

The Skeels arrangement translates the gang rumblings and rhythms composed by Leonard Bernstein Noun 1. Leonard Bernstein - United States conductor and composer (1918-1990)

into the sounds of new romance being born and anticipatory excitement. With a few word changes to suit the occasion, the entire chorale will jazz it, mix it, rock it and have a ball.

``Musical Valentine,'' featuring the Los Robles Master Chorale, jazz ensemble and soloists, will take place at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza The Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza is a performing arts and administrative center located in Thousand Oaks, California.
