VALENCIA TWINS STICK TOGETHER.

Byline: GERRY GITTELSON Community Sports

Tennis-playing twins Alexa and Cassie Strange, Valencia High's version of the Williams sisters The Williams Sisters refers to two professional American tennis players who are sisters:
  • Serena Williams, born September 26 1981, eight-time Grand Slam title winner (singles)
  • Venus Williams, born June 17 1980, six-time Grand Slam winner (singles)
, are headed to Marist College Marist College is a private liberal arts college of 180 acres (72 ha), located on the east bank of the Hudson River near Poughkeepsie, New York, on US 9. The site was established in 1905, and chartered in 1946.  in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., after verbally committing to full scholarships last weekend.

They'll sign letters of intent next month, and they couldn't be happier about remaining together for four more years while playing the game they love at an NCAA NCAA

``We like Marist a lot,'' Alexa said. ``We like the team, the coach, plus we have family in New York New York, state, United States

Added Cassie: ``It's a pretty good school for academics, too. Plus we want to stay together.''

The Strange sisters first made a splash on the tennis scene two years ago, when they won the 18-under girls' doubles tournament championship at the prestigious Ojai Invitational in·vi·ta·tion·al

. They've since dominated Foothill League tennis, and both are undefeated in singles as seniors this season.

They're the first Valencia girls' tennis players to receive Division I scholarships. So it's an historic month for the Strange sisters, who stand 5-foot-9 and combine terrific athleticism, an advanced knowledge of the game - and movie-star good looks.

``I'm just really happy for them because they really wanted to play for a D1 college,'' Valencia coach Anne Kellogg said. ``It's nice that they'll keep on playing together.''

--After struggling to an 0-7 start, first-year varsity football program Golden Valley High is switching quarterbacks for the fourth time since spring practice. Corey Bryant, a junior punter, takes over for the seniorless Grizzlies The name Grizzlies may refer to:

``Corey played a little bit in the second half last week and didn't complete a pass, but our plan against Salesian is to keep him in the whole game,'' coach Rob Swartz said.

Prior to summer practice, starting quarterback Trevon Smith transferred to Crespi of Encino after leading Golden Valley to a 4-4 JV record last year. Smith was Golden Valley's most productive player, passing for 1,085 yards and accounting for 19 touchdowns (eight passing, 11 rushing). Justin White and Jeremy Carson then shared duties, but White went down with a season-ending leg injury three weeks ago, and Carson has switched to running back, his original position.

Golden Valley, which is scheduled to join the Foothill League for the 2006-07 school year, is playing a freelance schedule.

Something positive? There are 13 Southern Section freelance schools, and Golden Valley is having a better season than Desert Mirage of Thermal, which is 0-7 and hasn't scored a point while allowing an average of more than 55 per game.

on their hand - but Canyon's Richie Wirthlin isn't most players. The tough little receiver/defensive back, who is generously listed at 5-foot-10, 151 pounds, but is an impact player on both sides of the ball, returned after just four weeks - in grand fashion. He caught two passes, one a 42-yard touchdown, and came through with an end-zone interception to spark a 55-7 victory Friday over Saugus, an outcome much more one-sided than expected.

``I guess you could call it a 'breakout' game, pun pun, use of words, usually humorous, based on (a) the several meanings of one word, (b) a similarity of meaning between words that are pronounced the same, or (c) the difference in meanings between two words pronounced the same and spelled somewhat similarly, e.g.  intended,'' coach Harry Welch said. ``We got Richie cleared Thursday by an orthopedic surgeon who's a hand specialist, and it was nice to have him back, because Richie provides a comfort zone for us that just isn't there when he's not around.''

According to the National Junior College Research Association, College of the Canyons consistently ranks in the top 50 community colleges in the nation. . Recent transfers Tyrell Smith and Ramon Perry have developed into two of the most productive receivers in NCAA Division II this season. Smith, who plays for Minnesota State, has 52 receptions for 712 yards and nine touchdowns. Perry (San Fernando San Fernando, city, Argentina
