VALENCIA SOPH TOPS LIST OF AREA QUALIFIERS.

Byline: Dave Shelburne Staff Writer

PALM SPRINGS - The deepest area talent base in at least 15 years carried seven area golfers into the state semifinals Monday, including Valencia High sophomore Louis Amira, whose 5-under-par 67 was good for second in the Southern Section individual final at Canyon Country Club.

``Today, just about everything was working,'' said Amira, who benefited from the work he and his father - golf professional Mike Amira - have put into his putting in recent weeks.

Amira had eight one-putt greens Monday in a 29-putt round that left him three shots behind section-record-setter Rickie Fowler Rickie Fowler is an amateur golfer from Murrieta, California. ``We've been working on (putting) since we first got to California,'' said Amira, who placed 24th in the Florida state championship last year. ``It was an adjustment, because in Florida you had to get used to more break. But Dad and I, we've finally got it now.''

Flintridge Prep of La Canada Flintridge senior Brett Kanda pressed Amira for area honors much of the day, getting as low as 4-under par through his first 10 holes before finishing with a 69 to tie for sixth and claim his berth in the June 2 CIF/SCGA championship at SCGA SCGA Southern California Golf Association

``I could have been a lot lower. I only missed one green,'' said Kanda, who came into his fourth section final 6-under par for the season and looking for Looking for

``I was trying to win it,'' said the UNLV-bound Kanda. ``I have a lot of confidence right now. I'm going down there (CIF/SCGA) looking to win.''

James Dalthorp III of Oaks Christian of Westlake Village and Nick Geyer of Viewpoint of Calabasas - Kanda's Prep League rival - survived the 12-man playoff at 73 for the final six of 28 berths available for the state semifinal.

Lipsky advanced with the same consistency he showed in the prelims. Hoffenberg conquered nerves and played his steadiest round of the postseason. Greiner did it with more grinding, shooting par with five bogeys and five birdies on a day he shanked one shot 90 degrees off line, then saved par with a 40-foot putt.

Seven local golfers failed to advance. One of the best not to make the cut was Oakwood of North Hollywood senior Ben Fox, who completed his high school career with a 75 in his third consecutive section final.

``It was a long week,'' said Fox, who might have set some sort of unofficial area record for tournament tenacity.
