VALENCIA - Paul Priesz, principal at Valencia High since the school opened in 1993, will represent California in the 2004 National High School Principal of the Year awards.

He will compete with more than 50 other principals nationwide for the award, which is given by the National Association of Secondary School Principals The National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) is a United States educational advocacy organization consisting of secondary school principals. To promote excellence among middle school and high school students, NASSP founded and still sponsors the National Honor  and MetLife.

``It's a recognition of a good job my staff has done,'' Priesz said Monday. ``I have a staff that are not afraid to try things that would help people grow and learn.''

The Association of California School Administrators nominated Priesz last month for the award, which recognizes outstanding high school principals for leadership, commitment to students and service. The group has previously named him California Secondary Principal of the Year for 2002.

``We opened with 800 students,'' he said. ``We'll be at 3,550 next fall. But our vision to do what we want to accomplish has stayed constant. We want students to ... connect with their future, and we want to help them do that.''

During nearly a decade at Valencia, Priesz has pushed to break down the traditional idea of separating students into college preparatory and vocational tracks.

Whether they're headed for work or college, Priesz and his staff have encouraged students to think beyond the next step and parlay An open programming interface (API) to a service provider's network (the network operator), developed by the Parlay Group (www.parlay.org). ``We want the students to make a connection between their education and their future,'' he said. ``We want them to go to college, but college is a means, not an end. We want them to think about their careers.''

Established in 1993, the Principal of the Year award recognizes school administrators who have made outstanding contributions to the profession. Winners will be announced in March 2004.
