VALENCIA - For the first time in the school's history, Valencia High's football team was able to play a night game at home Friday, with four new 90-foot-high stadium lights illuminating il·lu·mi·nate

Since the field has no bleachers, family and friends of the players brought blankets and folding chairs to the field for the high school's annual Purple and Gold Kickoff and the football scrimmage with Alemany High School.

Many parents confirmed that Friday night's crowd was the largest ever in attendance at a Valencia High game. Spectators sat around the field, and some even watched the game perched atop a hill overlooking the field.

Kathy Anderson and her father, Bob McCarty, had one of the best seats in the house - what McCarty described as the luxury box, since they had set up their folding chairs on a large mound of dirt overlooking the center of the field.

Those in attendance said that being able to play home games at their own school would boost the players' morale.

``It goes to school spirit. It builds school pride,'' said Steve Hale, whose son plays on the junior varsity team.

``We don't want to go to Canyon (High) anymore,'' he said.

During a special presentation prior to the scrimmage, the Saugus Centurions - who will also use the field - gave Valencia High a sign to hang at the school that reads: ``Future stadium site. Home of the Centurions and Vikings.''

City officials approached The Newhall Land and Farming Co., asking it to donate more than $200,000 needed to purchase and install the lights.

Though the donation was larger than normal, it agreed because it would benefit the community.

``It's both a donation to the school district, but it also is an improvement to that area, which is an area in Valencia,'' said Marlee Lauffer, Newhall Land spokeswoman.

Valencia High Principal Paul Priesz said the lights allow the school to expand use of its facilities, including using the fields for band or football practice during cooler night hours The Night Hours are the fixed times of prayer in the Divine Office of the Roman Catholic Church, that take place after sunset and before sunrise. School officials would like to see a stadium built around the lights for players at Valencia and Saugus high schools Saugus High School may refer to:

Despite the new scoreboard and electricity wired for a public announcement system and a snack bar, all the rest of the season's night games are scheduled at College of the Canyons or Canyon High since Valencia's fields have no bleachers.

``There's no question we need another stadium within the district,'' Priesz said. ``Our location is a good location.''

But Hart Union High School District officials have yet to make any decisions on whether a facility will be built, the principal said.
