VALENCIA GIRLS HAVE TWO GOLDEN OPPORTUNITIES.

Byline: Julio Cortez Staff Writer

They're the week's most important tennis matches and two of the most critical of the nonleague schedule.

The Valencia High girls' tennis team plays Quartz Hill and Lancaster once again this week, rematches from Saturday's tournament at Valencia.

Quartz Hill and Lancaster, the Golden League's top contenders, are excellent tuneups for Foothill League play.

``Just from the tournament, I think we have a good chance to beat Quartz Hill,'' said Valencia coach Jeff Holen, whose Vikings took fifth with five victories. ``It's going to be tough with Lancaster.''

Julia Peek, the Vikings' No. 1 singles player, is key for Valencia in today's 3 p.m. match against Lancaster. She beat her first opponent Saturday but lost in the quarterfinals.

The Rebels, who travel to Valencia for a 3 p.m. match Thursday, had Patti Young and Lannette Richardson reach the quarterfinals.

Valencia might face Quartz Hill and Lancaster again. All three teams are entered in Saturday's Palmdale tournament.

Girls' cross country: The Foothill League title may be won this year by a team that isn't drowning itself with nonleague practice meets.

Hart has only three preseason meets on its practice schedule, preferring training over meets. League competition begins Sept. 30.
