VALENCIA BASKETBALL STAR IS MR. EVERYTHING ALLAN IS HIGH-SCORING GUARD, BUT HE CAN PLAY POST, TOO.

Perhaps the Foothill League's most versatile boys' basketball player, Chad Chad (chăd, chäd), Fr. Tchad, officially Republic of Chad, republic (2005 est. pop. 9,826,000), 495,752 sq mi (1,284,000 sq km), N central Africa.  Allan Allan can refer to:

High is for the 6-foot-4 senior to see the ball as much as possible, so Allan has switched to guard this season, and he's he's

 off to a terrific start.

Allan is averaging 18.3 points per game, helping Valencia (5-2) to four consecutive victories entering Saturday's championship game in the Canyon Classic tournament.

He's coming off one of the best performances of his career, scoring a season-high 23 points Friday Friday: see Sabbath; week.

Allan also is averaging 6.8 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 2.2 steals, and he has committed just 11 personal fouls in Valencia's first six games.

``I guess I like playing guard because I like to get the ball and run. It allows me to do more offensive stuff,'' Allan said. ``We didn't so as well last year (16-12) because we didn't have any big men, and we didn't have a natural point guard. This year is different.''

Last year's height problem - which forced Allan into the post - has been solved with the addition of 6-10 Kevin Delange and 6-8 1/2 Donjay Kakonde, two of the tallest players in Foothill League history. Point guard Erick Savilla, just a freshman last year, has gained important experience, and he's one of several capable ballhandlers.

All of this opens things up for Allan.

``We came up a little bit short last year, but this year I think we're going to be able to show what we can do,'' Allan said. ``It really helps having a couple of big men this year.''

Allan spent the summer playing tournament basketball with the L.A. Naturally, Valencia coach Rocket Collins is pleased Allan has a more important role. The coach wants the ball in Allan's hands whenever the senior is on the floor.

``Chad is a very complete player,'' Collins said. ``He's quiet, but he works very hard, and he's just got a great, great work ethic work ethic

``He really can play all five positions because he's such a good all-around player. I think, eventually, he can play D-I college ball somewhere. He's quick enough, he can shoot the ball well enough, and he's got the competitiveness. He's just very competitive, and that's very important.''
