VALENCIA ANIMATORS JOIN BIG SONY DEAL.

Byline: Dave McNary Daily News Staff Writer

A pair of midsize animation houses, including Valencia-based Foundation Imaging, received a boost Monday from a deal with Sony Corp. to produce 40 television episodes of a ``Starship Troopers'' cartoon.

The agreement will lead to both companies doubling their work forces. ``A television show of this size requires the complete cooperation of all parties,'' said Kevin Kutchaver, president of Flat Earth, adding that the inter-company collaboration is ``unparalleled'' in TV history. Ron Thornton, president of 7-year-old Foundation, said, ``A television series of this scope and complexity has never been produced before.''

Monday's announcement comes amid Hollywood's growing interest in animation and is the first from Sony's new division, formed three weeks ago, to create long-lasting animated properties for the family market. ``Bug Wars'' will be executive produced by Sony's Richard Raynis, who oversees the studio's ``Godzilla'' and ``Men In Black'' TV series.
