Utah boy keeps cool head during fire.

Nine-year-old Jeremiah Calder was near the outside door to his family's vintage mobile home in Magna, Utah, when his father, 33-year-old Dave Calder, did an inadvisable thing--he poured gasoline on a fire in a wood-burning stove. Not surprisingly, the stove exploded, igniting Mr. Calder; Jeremiah's six-year-old brother, Braiden; and Jeremiah.

Jeremiah ran outside, but after ripping off his burning coat, he went back into the inferno to lead his father outside. He threw dirt on his father in an attempt to smother the flames and led the man to a nearby river, instructing his father to jump in, reported the Deseret Morning News.

With his father out of harm's way, Jeremiah again entered the mobile home to rescue his brother, Braiden, whose hands, face, and ears were on fire. After leading the boy outside, Jeremiah retrieved a jug of water from a nearby camper and poured it over his brother's head.

But Jeremiah's rescue efforts were still not finished. His half-sister, two-year-old Haley Parish, had been lying on a futon not far from the stove when the explosion occurred. Jeremiah went back inside to save her, but the raging fire kept him from reaching Haley. Firefighters later recovered her burned body.

Throughout the tragic episode, young Jeremiah demonstrated a maturity, presence of mind, and bravery that saved two lives. The elder Mr. Calder, for his part, may face criminal charges. "You hate to add insult to injury," sheriff's detective Kevin Orr told the Morning News, "but we'll look at every aspect before we make a decision."
