The residents of Mistmantle Island have lived in peace and harmony for many years. The royal family is wise, just, and much beloved by its subjects. However, beginning with a "night of riding stars," a night when a newborn "urchin" falls from the sky and onto the shores of the island, life on Mistmantle changes forever. The young prince consort is found murdered and his mother, the queen, soon dies of a broken heart.
