This event tells the story of Ignis Bird's unconventional fight for social justice and will appear on three Bay Area stages featuring many of the Bay Area's award-winning theatre artisans - just in time for the election. The Inkwell Communiques is an adaptation of Ignis Bird's genuine tax refusal letters to the government. This citizen, equipped with only a typewriter and a steadfast belief in the value of art and humanity, sought to resolve the imbalance between the funding of humanitarian programs and defense contracts with an irreverent and imaginative letter writing campaign. Over the course of three presidential administrations, Bird created more than seventy unique characters who wrote hundreds of letters to our government on Bird's behalf. Bird's act of peaceful protest is masterfully woven together and staged as an uproarious and thought-provoking evening of theatre by director Randall Stuart. Stuart's signature theatre style brings this lyrical, true story to life in a way that reminds us all about the importance of our voice in the political machine.

"The Inkwell Communiques, gives audiences a large cross section of Ignis Bird's characters. In this adaptation, we've theatrically activated Bird's imagination and we hope to take the audience on an amazing journey. Each character's voice resolutely defends Bird's staunch tax refusal stance and reinforces the piece's core belief that human life and well-being should always be the top government priority," said Stuart. The Inkwell Communiques is produced by the local creative team that delivered the globe's largest and most successful production of the worldwide, anti-war Lysistrata Project on March 3, 2003.
