Upgrading CPU in the field.

A new VMEbus-based single-board computer from General Micro Systems is reportedly the first to eliminate the dreaded processor obsolescence nightmare. The Condor (V265) CPU module is an Intel-based Pentium M processor engine mated to a 4 x 4 (P60) module that enables field replacement when technology or performance enhancements dictate.

Use of the P60 module allows in-the-field technology insertions without affecting the software, system and I/O functions of the baseboard. The Condor provides up to two GB of DDR SDRam operating as speeds of 266 MHz, and two independent PCI busses make full use of CPU bandwidth; one is a PCI-X-compliant bus tethered to a dual Gigabit Ethernet device and the other a PMC site.
