National Superintendent of the Year

Co-sponsored by The ServiceMaster Co.

This award is bestowed on a superintendent who has demonstrated all-around outstanding leadership. All 50 state finalists and an international representative are recognized during the first general session at The National Conference on Education. The four national finalists, including the Superintendent of the Year, receive cash awards and medallions. In addition, the national SOY soy (soi) soybean.

Distinguished Service Award

Retired AASA members who have exhibited exemplary leadership ability and who have enhanced school administration are eligible to receive this award, which includes an honorary life membership in AASA. Nominees are expected to have brought honor to themselves, their colleagues and their profession; given exemplary service to their state or national professional association; made significant contributions to the field of education through their service, writings or other activities; and have at least 10 years of membership in AASA. Graduate Student Scholarships

Six Graduate Student Scholarships of $2,000 each are available for outstanding graduate students who intend to pursue the public school superintendency Su`per`in`tend´en`cy

Character Education Recognition Program Seeks Applicants

Applications for the 2001 National Schools of Character Program, due in December, are available now from the Character Education Partnership. Finalists will be announced in October at CEP's annual forum in Philadelphia. Selected schools and districts receive a cash award, national recognition and a featured position in the Schools of Character publication. Join the AASA Executive Committee

If you're an active AASA member interested in making a meaningful contribution to education on a national level, you may be just the right person to serve on AASA's Executive Committee. The deadline for declaring candidacy is October 1. To request a candidate's packet, simply send a letter of intent to AASA Executive Director Paul Houston. If you choose to run, you must notify your state association and pay a $1,000 filing fee. Log on to AASA Online for a list of all AASA state associations.

In July, the AASA Resolutions Committee proposed a set of positions for the Association that address today's hottest education issues. The proposed resolutions will be voted on by delegates at the 2001 Delegate Assembly during The National Conference on Education, Feb. 16-18, 2001. Becoming a, delegate is your opportunity as an active AASA member to shape the priorities Executive Director Paul Houston, the Executive Committee and staff pursue on behalf of education leaders nationwide.
