Up to 18.2 GB of additional disk capacity now available for RDI's portable SPARC workstations.

CARLSBAD, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 11, 1997--

New peripheral unit gives PowerLite users expanded resources for

storage-intensive applications

RDI RDI - Receiver Data Interface  Computer Corp. Tuesday announced that it has introduced a new expansion unit with greater disk capacity and a faster CD-ROM drive A device that holds and reads CD-ROM discs. CD-ROM drives generally also play audio CD discs by sending analog sound to the sound card via a 4-pin cable. For specifications of 10x, 20x, etc. drives, see CD-ROM drives. See CD-ROM, CD-ROM changer, CD-ROM server and CD-ROM audio cable. , called the Maximum Peripheral Expansion Unit (MAX), for its industry-leading PowerLite portable SPARC-based workstations.

The PowerLite and MAX give users more disk capacity than any other SPARC-based portable.

MAX adds up to 18.2 gigabytes (GB) of removable hard disk (storage) removable hard disk - A type of magnetic disk, or possibly magneto-optical disk which is not permanently attached to the disk drive (not a fixed disk) but which can be taken out and replaced, allowing many disks to be used in the same drive.  storage, two SBus expansion slots and battery backup See UPS.  to the 3.6 GB of hard disk capacity available in a PowerLite. MAX enables PowerLite users to get up to a total of 21.8 GB of hard disk storage.

MAX was specifically designed for PowerLite users where high performance, large storage capacity, enhanced data security and confidentiality are required; for example, information management software developers and the military intelligence community.

"High-end applications incorporating the use of imaging, mapping, database management and video often require storage resources that even test the limits of desk-bound SPARC (Scalable Performance ARChitecture) A family of RISC CPUs from Sun that runs mostly under Sun's Solaris, but also under Linux and BSD operating systems. After development began in the mid-1980s by David Patterson of the University of California at Berkeley and Bill  workstations," said David Hartley, director of marketing, RDI. "MAX allows PowerLite users to store, transport and access a huge volume of information -- many times more than from any other SPARC-based portable."

MAX specifications

MAX can incorporate up to two 9.1 GB or 4.3 GB hard disk drives. The drives are removable for additional security and data confidentiality. The 9.1 GB drive is available with 9.7 millisecond One thousandth of a second. See space/time and ohnosecond.

(unit) millisecond - (ms) One thousandth of a second, one thousand microseconds. A long time for a modern computer.
(ms) average seek time, while the lower capacity drive is rated at 11.4 ms.

Users may choose to incorporate a CD-ROM drive for the playback of stored data and loading of software. Added in the 5.25-inch half-height bay in place of a removable hard disk drive, the new 12X CD-ROM drive offers significant performance advantages over previous generation devices.

MAX provides users with protection against power interruptions with an on-board uninterruptable power supply (UPS). The UPS can support PowerLite power needs for more than 30 minutes, depending on usage and other conditions.

Users of third-party SBus expansion cards for high-end imaging, graphics and multimedia applications, video capture, networking and communications can take advantage of MAX's standard SBus expansion card slots. MAX accommodates a single double-high, double-wide or two single- or double-height SBus cards, supporting standard power requirements.

MAX attaches to all models of the PowerLite by a semi-permanent screw connection for security and quality of attachment. MAX weighs just 7.4 lbs. without peripherals and has a slightly larger footprint than the notebook-sized PowerLite.

Host PowerLite systems

RDI's latest system is the PowerLite Turbo 170, the first portable workstation to incorporate the 170 MHz (MegaHertZ) One million cycles per second. It is used to measure the transmission speed of electronic devices, including channels, buses and the computer's internal clock. A one-megahertz clock (1 MHz) means some number of bits (16, 32, 64, etc.  TurboSPARC processor. With performance equivalent to the desktop SPARCstation 20, the new design nearly doubles the processing speed See MHz.  of systems based on the previous generation microSPARC chip.

The PowerLite Turbo 170 combines the new processor technology with up to 256 MB of memory, 512 KB of secondary cache See L2 cache.

(memory management) secondary cache - (Or "second level cache", "level two cache", "L2 cache") A larger, slower cache between the primary cache and main memory.
, a 12.1-inch high-resolution display (either 1024x768 or 800x600 resolutions), up to 3.6 GB of hard disk storage and other features in a 7.5-pound, notebook-sized package.

Other PowerLites include a PowerLite 110 and a Ruggedized PowerLite. All PowerLites are 100 percent compatible with Sun workstations, ensuring full system functionality and operate with the Sun Solaris operating system operating system (OS)
