His two previous books were Profit from the Core and Beyond the Core, so he hasn't strayed far from his, er, core message. [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] But Zook, the head of Bain & Co.'s Global Strategy practice, has clearly limned a vital business concept: companies have a central, or core, franchise that they need to protect, expand if possible and--as he posits in this new book--renew. Here, Zook argues that executives need to focus on organic growth and look deep within the recesses of their company to find undervalued Undervalued A stock or other security that is trading below its true value. These may be in the form of business platforms, customer insights or new capabilities that can serve as the building blocks for new and sustainable growth. Unstoppable features more than 30 in-depth interviews with CEOs from firms such as American Express Co., De Beers Group, Hyperion Solutions and Harman International. Zook writes that the firms chosen "are those that beat the odds" by fighting their way through "severe threats to their core, and found a way to renew their trajectory of profitable growth." It's somewhat ironic that Hyperion, saluted for its ability to reinvent itself following a sharp crisis in 2001, recently agreed to be acquired by Oracle Corp. But that's really a testament to part of Zook's central message: change is constant, and "strategies are becoming obsolete faster than ever before." Unstoppable is smart, effectively presented and manages to balance theory with a raft of good examples. |
