Jacksonville is the largest city in the state of Florida and the county seat of Duval County. , have had a busy year. Last summer, the students raised money to buy school supplies for 25 children in Honduras (one of the members went to Honduras on a mission trip and distributed the materials). The backpack supplies included pencils, paper, markers, scissors scissors Cutting instrument or tool consisting of a pair of opposed metal blades that meet and cut when the handles at their ends are brought together. Modern scissors are of two types: the more usual pivoted blades have a rivet or screw connection between the cutting ends , decorated flip flops, and T-shirts. During the Week of the Teacher celebration, the Branch focused their efforts on two first-year teachers (one a graduate of UNF UNF University of North Florida UNF Unfinished UNF Ungdommens Naturvidenskabelige Forening (Denmark) UNF United Nations Foundation UNF Ungdomens Nykterhetsförbund UNF United Nations Fund UNF Unified National Fine ). The members spent the week buying materials, volunteering in the classroom, and cutting, laminating, and creating bulletin boards for each teacher. The Branch also organized five booths and more than 25 volunteers for the on-campus child care facility's annual Literacy Day fundraiser. In November, Branch members organized a walk and raised nearly $1,000 for Heifer International Heifer International is a non-profit charitable organization based in Little Rock, Arkansas, dedicated to relieving global hunger and poverty. It provides gifts of livestock and plants, as well as education in sustainable agriculture, to financially-disadvantaged families around (a not-for-profit group that purchases livestock for those living in poverty in an effort to help them become self-sustaining). The Branch holds monthly meetings and has hosted several Make-and-Take sessions on such topics as writing resumes and interview techniques. Ten members are volunteering at and attending the 2007 ACEI ACEI Angiotensin Converting Enzyme Inhibitor ACEI Association for Childhood Education International ACEI Association of Consulting Engineers of Ireland conference in Tampa. They will be facilitating and attending sessions and participating in the student group activities. UNF Dean Larry Daniel and Department of Childhood Education Chair Nile Stanley have agreed to pay for the students' registration fees and hotel room costs. --Katrina Hall, University of North Florida ACEI |
