University of Michigan Health System and IBM to Create Advanced "CareWeb" Clinical Information System; Online Order Entry, Wireless, Intranet and Internet Communications Planned.Business Editors/Health, Medical & Hi Tech Writers ANN ARBOR Ann Arbor, city (1990 pop. 109,592), seat of Washtenaw co., S Mich., on the Huron River; inc. 1851. It is a research and educational center, with a large number of government and industrial research and development firms, many in high-technology fields such as , Mich. & ARMONK, N.Y.--(BW HealthWire)--Dec. 8, 2000 Jimmy is a very sick little boy, and his doctor is ordering medicine that will help make him better. She orders Jimmy's medicine using a new electronic system that immediately alerts her to Jimmy's allergy to the medicine she was about to prescribe, without the need to check the paper medical record. So, she selects another effective drug and instantly transmits Jimmy's prescription to the hospital pharmacy A hospital pharmacy is concerned with pharmacy service to all types of hospital and differs considerably from a community pharmacy. Some pharmacists in hospital pharmacies may have more complex clinical medication management issues whereas pharmacists in community in a clearly readable format - as it is simultaneously entered in his chart. Before the doctor leaves his side, Jimmy's medicine is on the way and his nurse is electronically alerted to the urgent new medication order. The University of Michigan Health System The medical center also includes the Michigan Health Corporation, through which UMHS partners with other medical centers and hospital to provide specialized care throughout Michigan. (UMHS UMHS University of Michigan Health System ) and IBM (International Business Machines Corporation, Armonk, NY, www.ibm.com) The world's largest computer company. IBM's product lines include the S/390 mainframes (zSeries), AS/400 midrange business systems (iSeries), RS/6000 workstations and servers (pSeries), Intel-based servers (xSeries) today announced a joint initiative to develop an advanced, Web-based, clinical information system designed to reduce medication errors and further improve its high level of patient care. The UMHS CareWeb Clinical Information System will provide comprehensive information throughout the continuum of care. An enterprise-wide, Web-based infrastructure will provide electronic physician order entry of prescriptions and other clinical procedures that can improve clinical outcomes. The goal is to increase patient satisfaction and to support UMHS' ongoing work with local and state partners to create healthy communities. "We are known throughout the world for our excellence in medicine and research," said Lloyd Jacobs Dr. Lloyd A. Jacobs is the president of the University of Toledo. His previous occupation was chief of staff at the University of Michigan hospital. , M.D. COO UMHS. "Together with IBM, a global leader in technology, we will develop a cutting-edge, comprehensive, clinical information and care management system. We are proud of the excellent care we now provide, but we know it can be even better through the use of technology tools that bring information to our physicians and nurses, where and when it is most needed - at the point of care." The first phase of the program, currently in progress, is to design and build a new, Web technology based infrastructure to support medication management. This will help ensure fast, accurate transmission of medication orders. Secondly, UMHS and IBM are building an enterprise-wide clinical data repository A Clinical Data Repository (CDR) is a real-time database that consolidates data from a variety of clinical sources to present a unified view of a single patient. It is optimized to allow clinicians to retrieve data for a single patient rather than to identify a population of . This repository will incorporate an advanced medical lexicon to standardize clinical nomenclature. Such standardization in medical terminology Medical terminology is a vocabulary for accurately describing the human body and associated components, conditions, processes and procedures in a science-based manner. This systematic approach to word building and term comprehension is based on the concept of: (1) Word roots, (2) also supports patient care research to determine the effectiveness of medical and nursing treatments and other clinical interventions, and provides support for clinical decision making. CareWeb and the enterprise-wide data repository system was created by the University of Michigan (body, education) University of Michigan - A large cosmopolitan university in the Midwest USA. Over 50000 students are enrolled at the University of Michigan's three campuses. The students come from 50 states and over 100 foreign countries. in 1997. IBM is now helping to enhance that with physician order entry. Future applications may include consultation management, coordination of care and outcomes, patient records, patient charge capture, clinical data capture and patient/partner/payor documentation. As a team we will combine the deep clinical expertise at the University of Michigan Health System with IBM's broad technology experience. IBM is providing clinical and technological expertise from its consulting organization and its research labs to create, test and integrate, the new systems." The solution will use IBM Websphere(TM) Advanced Edition, version 3.5 and IBM VisualAge(R) for Java 3.5 and Websphere Studio with a phased deployment targeted for 1Q, 2002.
