University of Iowa named Collegiate Chapter of the Year.


The University of Iowa Not to be confused with Iowa State University.
The first faculty offered instruction at the University in March 1855 to students in the Old Mechanics Building, situated where Seashore Hall is now. In September 1855, the student body numbered 124, of which, 41 were women.

Founded in September 2004, the University of Iowa MTNA Student Chapter (UIMTNASC) has already grown to 15 members. It frequently provides a variety of activities aimed at serving others through music related functions, and it promotes the value of music among chapter members and the community.

The members of UIMTNASC have demonstrated a strong social obligation by holding two benefit concerts in 2005. The Tsunami Relief Benefit concert took place February 5, and proceeds of $2,355 were donated to the American Refugee Committee's "Fishing Boat Project," which replaces boats lost by Thai fisherman in the tsunami. The second event, which took place in October, raised $1,200, which was donated to the New Orleans New Orleans (ôr`lēənz –lənz, ôrlēnz`), city (2006 pop. 187,525), coextensive with Orleans parish, SE La., between the Mississippi River and Lake Pontchartrain, 107 mi (172 km) by water from the river mouth; founded  Center for the Creative Arts to benefit victims of Hurricane Katrina.

UIMTNASC also has worked to foster the musical interests of young community members. It has held a community outreach concert called "Dueling Pianos" and is currently on the roster to perform "Peter and the Wolf For other uses, see .
Peter and the Wolf is a composition by Sergei Prokofiev written in 1936 after his return to the Soviet Union. It is a children's story (with both music and text by Prokofiev), spoken by a narrator accompanied by the orchestra.
" to grade schools and high schools across Iowa.

To lead by example, UIMTNASC has sponsored two pedagogy workshops, each attracting nearly 20 area teachers. Nearly half its members attended the 2006 MTNA National Conference in Austin, Texas.
