University backs hooligans (Canada).Vancouver--One of the paradoxes of our time is that people who emphasize the simple, scientific fact that when a human sperm sperm or spermatozoon (spûr'mətəzō`ən, –zō`ŏn), in biology, the male gamete (sex cell), corresponding to the female ovum in organisms that reproduce sexually. fertilizes a human ovum a new human being comes into existence, are looked on as fanatics, religious fundamentalists, even though this proposition by itself has nothing to do with religion. Curiously, the place where this fact is most unwelcome is in an institution supposedly devoted to the pursuit of truth--the university. On November 23, 1999, a pro-life display at the University of British Columbia Locations Vancouver The Vancouver campus is located at Point Grey, a twenty-minute drive from downtown Vancouver. It is near several beaches and has views of the North Shore mountains. The 7. The Alma Mater Society of Queen's University, otherwise known as the AMS . One, Erin Kaiser, also represented "Students for Choice"; another, Jon Chandler, is a representative of "Students for fair treatment". Allowing neither choice nor fair treatment, they tore up the displays, scattering them all over the ground. Two months earlier, the University itself had set an impossible fee of $10,000 per day plus a $5,000 deposit against possible damages, to bar a perfectly respectable organization from promoting a 'reform of bioethics' conference including the display of photos of aborted a·bort v. a·bort·ed, a·bort·ing, a·borts v.intr. 1. UBC never explained why the group--which has held conferences and displays on university campuses in the past without the slightest disturbance--suddenly had become a "security" risk. Nor has the administration done anything about the three hooligans. In short, at UBC, a politically correct politically correct Politically sensitive adjective Referring to language reflecting awareness and sensitivity to another person's physical, mental, cultural, or other disadvantages or deviations from a norm; a person is not mentally retarded, but administration bows to the threat of violence from the pro-abortionists, while accusing pro-life of disturbing the peace. |
