HOUSTON -- University General Hospital, located near the Texas Medical Center area, has received its Medicare provider number, recognizing the facility as a general acute care hospital, and allowing the hospital to treat and bill for Medicare patients.

"We believe that our presence in the marketplace is good for healthcare consumers because it compels other healthcare providers to step up and provide excellent service as well. Competition in the marketplace is a good thing for consumers. Our next step is to apply to become a Medicaid provider which will allow us to serve the full spectrum of the patient population in Houston. In addition, it is our fervent desire that managed care companies will see the benefit of allowing their customers to choose where they will receive healthcare as well, by allowing each of the University General Hospital facilities to become an in-network provider," said Comer.
