University Clinic Erlangen Saves Time and Resources with Flexible Integration Infrastructure from SeeBeyond.

SeeBeyond (Nasdaq:SBYN), provider of the world's first integrated composite application network (SeeBeyond ICAN) for advanced integration and composite application solutions, today announced that the University Clinic Erlangen has elected to migrate its current deployment of SeeBeyond to the SeeBeyond Integrated Composite Application Network (SeeBeyond ICAN) Suite, with plans to complete the transition by the end of 2004.

As an adopter of state-of-the-art IT solutions, the University Clinic Erlangen has traditionally ranked among the pioneers in the use of innovative technology. For example, as early as 1995, the University initiated a program focused on the deployment of a centralized integration platform, called the "Erlangen Communication Hub" (EKDS). Based on the SeeBeyond platform since 1997, the EKDS has been consistently enhanced to meet new demands, as the diversity of the connected systems has risen, and thus also the communication volume.

Among the latest challenges facing University Clinic Erlangen are the establishment and expansion of the electronic patient folder, the implementation of Diagnosis-Related Groups (DRGs) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DRG), as well as supporting and optimizing business processes. Of overriding importance is the integration of the new Clinical Workstation System (KAS) Soarian from Siemens, the use of which is currently being validated by University Clinic Erlangen.

"The SeeBeyond platform has played a key role within our organization, with a large number of projects having depended on the unified integration platform," said Detlef Kraska, Group Head Clinical Communication at University Clinic Erlangen. "For instance, we have been validating the new KAS Soarian from Siemens since 2002. Without a flexible communication solution such as that from SeeBeyond, it would not have been possible to integrate such a system. Furthermore, we look forward to deploying the SeeBeyond ICAN Suite, as it affords us additional capabilities such as composite application development that we would otherwise not have with traditional EAI solutions."

Based on Java and supporting open standards (J2EE), SeeBeyond ICAN 5 will allow University Clinic Erlangen to develop interfaces to its disparate applications more flexibly, quickly and cost-effectively. Following a test phase in August, and a formal implementation beginning in October, the new platform is scheduled to go into production at the end of December 2004. In addition to the migration to its flagship platform, eGate(TM) Integrator, University Clinic Erlangen also plans to leverage the SeeBeyond eInsight(TM) Business Process Manager to enable workflow modelling -- resulting in the ability to develop, monitor and manage complex business processes more easily.

Saving time was a major criterion for the selection and deployment of an integration solution. "Our staff must maintain a high degree of hospital-specific expertise. In addition, there has historically been an issue with employee retention across the industry. For these reasons, we needed a solution that required a low level of training in order to maximize the productivity of our staff, and allow them to focus on true value added services. This is what SeeBeyond has afforded us," added Kraska.
