Universal Records Enters Distribution Agreement With Suave House Records
One of the hottest new rap labels, Houston-based Suave House Records has gained industry recognition for its success with top-selling regional rap groups. Under this new agreement, Universal Records will provide promotional, marketing, publicity and creative services for Suave Records' releases. Tony Draper, Founder/Chief Executive Officer of Suave House, will continue to oversee A&R and day-to-day operations of the label.
Commenting on the agreement, Mr. Morris said, "In a short period of time, Tony has demonstrated a great skill for discovering and developing some of the most original and cutting edge new rap artists. I am extremely pleased that Tony and Suave House are joining the Universal Music Group family of labels."
"I have been watching Doug Morris for years, and not only do I respect all of the companies and executives he's brought up, I respect him because he brings the best out of people," said Tony Draper. "I am very excited to work with Jean Riggins [President, Black Music, Universal Records], Jocelyn Cooper- Gilstrap [Senior Vice President & Special Assistant to the Chairman, Universal Music Group], Marc Offenbach [Vice President, Sales, Universal Records] Jackie Rhinehart [Vice President, Black Music Marketing, Universal Records] and the rest of the Universal family."
Added Jean Riggins, Universal's President of Black Music, "Suave House is one of the most successful independent rap labels in the music industry. I look forward to working with their talented staff and artists in achieving greater success through our joint efforts."
Suave House Records' artist roster includes South Circle, Crime Boss and Tela. Also on the roster are gold-selling rappers Eightball & MJG, who have achieved remarkable success with three albums released on Suave: "Coming Out Hard" (1993), "On The Outside Looking In" (1994) and "On Top Of the World" (1995). Collectively, their albums have sold over one million units with limited distribution and little video and radio airplay. The highly- anticipated MJG solo album is expected to be released by Suave House/Universal Records in September.
