This year the "League" had eleven franchises, the most in USBS history, competing for the USBS title. The weekend of July 5th and 6th, the USBS held its Fourth Annual Post-Season Festival in Atlantic City Atlantic City, city (1990 pop. 37,986), Atlantic co., SE N.J., an Atlantic resort and convention center; settled c.1790, inc. 1854. The Florida Sharks, defending their USBS Championships, recaptured the Title by defeating the Atlantic City Seagulls The Atlantic City Seagulls were an exhibition basketball team that regularly lost predetermined exhibition games to the Harlem Globetrotters starting in 1971. It was owned by Louis Klotz and based in Margate, New Jersey. in front of almost 2,000 hometown fans. This season, the USBS, also known as the "League of Opportunity", experienced an increase in average per game attendance of over 30%, and overall total league attendance increases of more than 60%. Management attributed this growth to a certain perceived "value", that is, the average price range of tickets ($3-7) allows fans to enjoy professional athletics at economical prices. Management attributes a number of factors to the USBS's increased success. Firstly, there are eleven franchises compared to nine in 1995. Secondly, where major professional sports teams charge significantly higher ticket prices, the USBS has clearly made an effort to keep the price of admission economical. Thirdly, the USBS has attempted to target new franchise opportunities in geographical locations that offer "grass-roots" support for their local team. These cities typically tend to be small to mid-size cities. For example, Portland, Maine and Sarasota, Fla. have USBS franchises that have shown to be capable of financial viability. "Opening Night" in Portland saw 4,250 fans cheering for their Mountain Cats. The Florida Sharks had several games each with attendance of over 3,000. Florida led the league in average attendance of 2,054. The Portland Mountain Cats followed right behind with 2,045 fans each game. Commissioner Daniel T. Meisenheimer, III, was quoted as saying, "We are extremely pleased with the "League's" overall results both on and off the court this season. We have continued to offer exciting, professional basketball entertainment at reasonable prices. This year the fans recognized and responded to the quality of the talent which was some of the best the League has ever fielded. The result was an overall increase in attendance. With the excitement and optimism generated this year, the next few years could prove to be most rewarding for the "League", the fans and our shareholders." This season, the USBS saw one of its players drafted at the 1996 NBA Draft. Joe Vogal, a 6'11 center out of Colorado State, played for the New Hampshire New Hampshire, one of the New England states of the NE United States.
