United States : LA OKs Google Apps deal.

The city council in Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  on Tuesday unanimously approved a $7.2 million deal to use Google Apps A collection of Google applications and utilities that is offered as a package either free or paid. In 2007, Google combined its e-mail, instant messaging, calendar, word processing, spreadsheet and Web authoring applications along with administration utilities into Standard and Premier .

The contract is tentative, contingent on Adj. 1. contingent on - determined by conditions or circumstances that follow; "arms sales contingent on the approval of congress"

 integration provider Computer Sciences Corp.'s agreement to pay a penalty in the event of a security breach, according to the Associated Press.

A week ago, the City Council's Budget and Finance Committee delayed taking action on the deal citing cost concerns.

Security concerns featured prominently in the debate over the contract, which calls for moving from Novell to Google's hosting service for e-mail and office applications.

LA joins the District of Columbia District of Columbia, federal district (2000 pop. 572,059, a 5.7% decrease in population since the 1990 census), 69 sq mi (179 sq km), on the east bank of the Potomac River, coextensive with the city of Washington, D.C. (the capital of the United States).  as one of the largest government adoptions of Google Apps. The contract is a win for Google in its competition with Microsoft for enterprise customers.
