Although the German V-1 (1944) was a simple cruise missile, the cruise missile did not realize its potential until the 1970s, when the United States sought to  worth as much as $4.4 billion after the weapon was successful 15 out of 16 times in recent tests, according to according to

That record compares with tests during November 2008 and last January and February when just six of 10 missiles detonated on impact or hit their target. The weapon was declared combat- ready five years ago and has been deployed even though its testing record was unsatisfactory.

The successful tests last month could produce sales worth as much as $4.4 billion through 2023 if the missile program passes a Pentagon Pentagon

$1 Million Bonus

Lockheed now will receive a $1 million bonus for scoring 15 successes, she said. The company would have received $1 million more if all 16 shots were good, Platt said.

Lockheed has contracts so far to build 1,053 Joint Air-to- Surface-Standoff Missiles and has received about $600 million. The company would receive about $4.4 billion more from building the remaining 3,847 the service plans to buy. These contracts would be separate from foreign sales. Australia wants to buy an extended-range version of the missile.

Lockheed spokeswoman Heather Kelly said the 94 percent reliability record in the recent tests was the result of manufacturing changes and improvements in screening the quality of parts shipped to its Troy plant.

The company is also increasing oversight of subcontractor One who takes a portion of a contract from the principal contractor or from another subcontractor.
