United Devices More Than Doubles Its Patent Portfolio.

2006 Grants Push Grid Technology Patents to 10; Five Apps Still Pending

AUSTIN, Texas -- Grid technology and virtual infrastructure expert United Devices United Devices, Inc. is a privately held, commercial distributed computing company that focuses on the use of grid computing to manage HPC infrastructures and enterprise cluster management.  (UD) announced today that its portfolio of patents doubled in 2006 with six patents assigned to the company for software developments in distributed processing The first term used to describe the distribution of multiple computers throughout an organization in contrast to a centralized system. It started with the first minicomputers. Today, distributed processing is called "distributed computing." The knowledge base represented by these patents underscores United Devices' expansion from pure grid applications for high performance computing systems into broader distributed computing (1) The use of multiple computers networked throughout a wide geographical area, or the world via the Internet, in order to solve a single problem. See grid computing.

"These latest patent awards are a testament to the continuing ingenuity of United Devices employees and the ability of our company to attract and retain some of the brightest engineers and IT professionals anywhere," said Ben Rouse, UD's chief executive officer. "And, of course, patents now protect some of this company's critical intellectual property, ensuring that would-be competitors cannot encroach encroach v. to build a structure which is in whole or in part across the property line of another's real property. The patent applications represent a range of applications in the realm of distributed processing. Patent 7092985 granted August 15, 2006, was for United Devices' identification of a method for managing project workload organization, management, and distribution in a distributed parallel processing parallel processing, the concurrent or simultaneous execution of two or more parts of a single computer program, at speeds far exceeding those of a conventional computer.  system. Patent 7082474 granted July 25, 2006, involves providing data sharing The ability to share the same data resource with multiple applications or users. It implies that the data are stored in one or more servers in the network and that there is some software locking mechanism that prevents the same set of data from being changed by two people at the same time.  and filed distribution in a distributed processing system. Patent 7039670 granted May 2, 2006, applies to massively distributed processing systems and associated methods that utilize a processing architecture for a multitude of widely distributed devices to process project workloads.

Other patents address methods for simplifying unobtrusive distribution of compute-intensive applications and incentive-based aggregation of compute capacity for processing, storage, broadcasting, or other objectives.

United Devices said applications for five additional patents remain pending. To date UD is the assignee assignee (assign) n. a person to whom property is transferred by sale or gift, particularly real property. (See: assign)

of 10 patents representing a wide diversity of technology assets and expertise. Among these is an Internet Search patent covering content indexing that, when combined with leading search algorithms, produces the most up to date indexes while allowing all media types to be included in search results. This approach to content indexing is considered by many to be the future of search engine technology.

As a private company, United Devices does not disclose financial results but has acknowledged it is growing rapidly, with headquarters in Austin, Texas, and offices in London, Paris, Pune, India, and elsewhere across the United States. It has more than doubled its employee base since 2004 to more than 100 personnel serving hundreds of customers, most coming from the Global 2000.
