United Airlines' March traffic increases 7.4 percent.

CHICAGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 8, 1996--United Airlines today reported that its total scheduled revenue passenger miles Revenue passenger miles (RPMs) is a measure of a passenger traffic for an airline flight, bus, or train calculated by multiplying the total number of revenue-paying passengers aboard the vehicle by the distance traveled measured in miles.  (RPMs) increased 7.4 percent in March vs. the comparable month in 1995.

"We are very pleased with our overall traffic performance in March," said John Edwardson, president and chief operating officer Chief Operating Officer (COO)

The officer of a firm responsible for day-to-day management, usually the president or an executive vice-president.
. "The earlier arrival of Easter Easter [A.S. Eastre, name of a spring goddess], chief Christian feast, commemorating the resurrection of Jesus after his crucifixion. In the West, Easter is celebrated on the Sunday following the full moon next after the vernal equinox (see calendar); thus, it  this year helped spur March traffic. Our Pacific traffic showed solid growth, led by the Japanese Japanese (jăp'ənēz`), language of uncertain origin that is spoken by more than 125 million people, most of whom live in Japan. There are also many speakers of Japanese in the Ryukyu Islands, Korea, Taiwan, parts of the United States, and  markets. And our Atlantic traffic was especially robust with an 83.4 percent passenger load factor -- a rare achievement this time of the year."

The airline's total scheduled RPMs were 9,891,446,000 compared with 9,207,532,000 in the same month of 1995.

For the month, domestic revenue passenger miles totaled 6,183,720,000, an increase of 5.4 percent from 5,869,625,000 accumulated ac·cu·mu·late
