United Airlines' healthy, Heart Smart meals win international catering award.


CHICAGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 27, 1996--United Airlines' innovative Heart Smart inflight Special Meal program won a silver medal at the International Flight Catering Association 1996 Mercury Awards ceremony, surpassing entries by British Airways British Airways

 and Swissair. The international event, held earlier this month in Rome, honors air carriers and food service companies from around the world for creativity and excellence in inflight catering.

For the past seven months, United Airlines has worked closely with Heart Smart Restaurants International to provide air travelers with Special Meals that are lower in calories, saturated fat saturated fat, any solid fat that is an ester of glycerol and a saturated fatty acid. The molecules of a saturated fat have only single bonds between carbon atoms; if double bonds are present in the fatty acid portion of the molecule, the fat is said to be  and cholesterol.

All vegetarian, religious, medical and lighter choice Special Meals served by United Airlines meet the Heart Smart guidelines and are accompanied by a fact card that spells out nutritional information. Meals meeting the guidelines must contain 30 percent or less calories from total fat, 10 percent or less calories from saturated fat, 150 mg. or less cholesterol, and 1,100 mg. or less sodium.

The Mercury Award was the second honor United's Heart Smart meals have received. Last Fall, the U.S.-based Physician's Committee for Responsible Medicine cited United as having the healthiest meals among U.S. air carriers.
