Unisys-Operated Cargo Portal Services Launches Two New Services to Help Clients Comply with Customs Regulations.

BLUE BELL, Pa. -- Freight Forwarders and Airlines Can Now Benefit from House Waybill Services and a Template for Recurring Bookings

Unisys-operated Cargo Portal Services (CPS) today announced two new services for its freight forwarder and airline users - house waybill processing and a reusable template for recurring bookings. Waybills are the receipts for goods that are being shipped. These services underscore CPS' unique ability to meet the needs of forwarders and cargo airlines in making electronic booking and shipment management as efficient as possible.

"These new services are a leap forward in helping cargo companies cut red tape and avoid shipping delays," said Christopher Shawdon, vice president of logistics solutions at Unisys.

CPS introduced house waybill services in response to the new United States Customs and Border Patrol four-hour ruling that became effective for East Coast U.S. ports on August 13. The ruling, which is being extended throughout the country during the remainder of 2004, requires that airlines and forwarders provide the house waybill details of shipments no less than four hours in advance of flights arriving into the U.S. If this information is not provided to U.S. Customs, shipments will be delayed, often creating a domino effect because more than one flight segment may be required before a shipment arrives at its final destination.

Currently, the predominant way that the airlines receive house waybill data electronically is via the industry standard consolidation list (FHL) message. Otherwise, they must manually enter the data into their cargo operational system using paper given to them by the forwarder. To save carriers data entry effort, and to help those forwarders - often small-to-medium-sized - who are unable to send the FHL message, CPS offers three ways in which carriers and forwarders can use the new house waybill service:

1. via the Web;

2. through an XML system-to-system interface with forwarder systems; or

3. through an EDI-Internet interface with forwarder systems using the FHL message.

Forwarders can then create and modify the house waybill information and submit it to the participating carriers who will in turn send it to U.S. Customs. CPS does not charge for the service, but individual carriers may apply a handling fee for checking and processing. By offering three efficient ways to send shipment information to U.S. customs, carriers and forwarders using CPS will avoid shipping delays.

CPS is also launching a new service, operational in October, called "recycle booking," which gives users an easy way to submit their permanent or recurring bookings. Until now, even if a booking was repeated exactly day after day, or week after week, all booking data needed to be re-entered from scratch. The CPS recycle booking service allows the user to store booking data in a template, which can be used in the future to create a single recurring booking or an entire week of recurring bookings. Using the recycle booking service, a forwarder can quickly and accurately get confirmations for its consolidation allocations.
