Unisys To Automate Weather Tracking And Analysis For Northwest Airlines' Pacific Operations.

Unisys Corp. Tuesday announced that Northwest Airlines has selected Unisys industry-leading weather processing systems and services to automate weather tracking and analysis at its Pacific Operations Control (POC) facility in Japan.

With up-to-the-minute weather information and analyses, Northwest is expected to save 10 to 12 hours a day over manual plotting.

"We have been using a very similar Unisys solution at the Northwest Systems Operation Control center since 1996," said Tom Fahey, manager of meteorology at Northwest. "Its performance has given us confidence that we will be implementing a proven, economical solution at POC, made more valuable by Unisys excellent record of responsiveness."

Unisys will provide its weather processing systems, printing and plotting hardware and software, and integration services for Northwest's Pacific operations near Tokyo's Narita International Airport . These systems will eliminate the manual plotting of aviation weather data such as wind speed and direction.

The high-speed Auto Plotting of current surface and upper air reports and pilot reports (PIREPS) uses weather data streams provided by the Japanese Meteorological Association (JMA) and Northwest Airlines. The Unisys solution takes maximum advantage of existing data and systems, with proven solutions that minimize the implementation risk.

The solution provides for display and plotting of unique in-country weather data from the JMA, plus international pilot reports, including those straight from Northwest's cockpits.

The Unisys solution supports access across Northwest's corporate wide area and local area networks and stores and retrieves data to support a 90-day archive. Unisys will provide on-site integration services, including integration with an existing Apple Macintosh LAN.

In addition to the advanced weather processing software, the Unisys-supplied laser printer outputs 8.5-inch by 14-inch high-resolution DIFAX forecast charts and smaller versions of the large-scale 2-foot by 3-foot Station Model plots automatically produced on the plotter.

DIFAX laser printers replace ribbon printers, which will save time and money with fast, accurate printouts of weather data.
