North Dakota is one of the first states to implement a modern and efficient IT system for its motor vehicle agency, and this system is significantly reducing the time it takes for information to be processed and transactions to be completed.

Unisys Corporation (NYSE:UIS) provided extensive systems integration services for the development of the North Dakota Department of Transportation's Vehicle Registration and Titling System (VRTS).

North Dakota's VRTS has been operational for approximately one year and has realized numerous benefits for Motor Vehicle Division (MVD) employees and customers because of the system's advanced technological applications such as digital imaging.

These benefits include: immediate, automatic update of the motor vehicle database so that accurate data can be quickly provided to law enforcement officials and MVD personnel; online retrieval and verification of customer applications; faster ordering of license plates; faster deposit of customer checks; instant refund check authorization; the ability to incorporate legislative changes quickly and cost-effectively; reduced postage and printing costs; automation of manual processes such as the issuance of personalized plates; and reduction of data entry keystrokes.

In the development of the VRTS, Unisys converted all existing records in the legacy systems, designed the Oracle database platform, implemented the Unisys InfoImage system that allows for digital imaging of all source documents, and integrated a DP500 Remittance Processing system for check processing.

In addition, the installation of hardware included computer terminals and laser printers for 12 district offices.
