For the 17th straight year, Unisys Corporation (NYSE:UIS) will provide tailored scoring solutions to the United States Golf Association (USGA) for its three U.S. Open golf championships, beginning with the 102nd U.S. Open Championship at Bethpage State Park's renowned Black Course from Thursday, June 13, to Sunday, June 16, in Farmingdale, N.Y.

As part of its ongoing partnership with the USGA, Unisys serves as the sole provider of computerized golf scoring and information services, relaying scores and play statistics to tournament attendees and organizers, the Web, television broadcasters and viewers at home.

Through the Unisys scoring system, detailed information on the progress of the championship competition is recorded at greenside, tabulated through a centralized network of workstations supported by Windows 2000, relayed to a central server, displayed around the course leader boards and made available to broadcasters and the official USGA Web site, all within seconds.

New Intermec Handheld Computers Capture Scores at Greenside

To ensure that information is provided quickly and accurately to multiple audiences, as in past years, Unisys will utilize powerful wireless handheld computers from Intermec Technologies Corporation to record shots and scoring at greenside. Making its U.S. Open debut, the flexible Intermec Model 710 utilizes a Microsoft Windows for Pocket PC operating system.

Scoring System Integral to Other Golf Championships

The integrated Unisys scoring system also will be utilized at the U.S. Senior Open Championship, which will be held June 27 through 30 at the Caves Valley Golf Club in Baltimore and the 2002 U.S. Women's Open Championship, scheduled for July 4 through 7 at Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kan.

In addition, Unisys recently announced an agreement with The PGA of America to provide support for the PGA Championship, Senior PGA Championship and PGA Club Professional Championship. Since 1980, Unisys has been the scoring provider for the British Open Championship, making the company the official event-scoring partner for three of the four major golf tournaments.

Unisys also supports the PGA European and Australian Tours, the Tour de las Americas, World Cup of Golf, Hong Kong Open, South African Tour, Canadian Tour and Dunhill Cup.
