Unisphere Solutions, Inc., a provider of converged networking solutions for carriers and Internet service providers Internet service provider (ISP)

Company that provides Internet connections and services to individuals and organizations. For a monthly fee, ISPs provide computer users with a connection to their site (see data transmission), as well as a log-in name and password.
, together with Siemens, announced today that Argus Telecommunications, a division of the Rail Access Corporation (RAC See remote access concentrator. ), is deploying Unisphere's ERX-1400 Edge Routing Switch. Argus will deploy the ERX to assist the State Rail Authority implementation of its Safe Station Program. Under this program, 302 railway stations will be brought under video surveillance using a video-over-IP network. The wire-speed performance of the ERX platform makes it ideally suitable for jitter A flicker or fluctuation in a transmission signal or display image. The term is used in several ways, but it always refers to some offset of time and space from the norm. For example, in a network transmission, jitter would be a bit arriving either ahead or behind a standard clock cycle  and latency-sensitive applications such as video- and voice-over-IP.

The Safe Station Program will allow secure voice, video and data communications between stations and control centers throughout the city rail network. The deployment will also allow Argus Telecommunications to offer a range of innovative services in support of its customers in New South Wales New South Wales, state (1991 pop. 5,164,549), 309,443 sq mi (801,457 sq km), SE Australia. It is bounded on the E by the Pacific Ocean. Sydney is the capital. The other principal urban centers are Newcastle, Wagga Wagga, Lismore, Wollongong, and Broken Hill. , utilizing the ERX's support for IP Virtual Private Networks (VPNs), Quality of Service (QoS), and Broadband Remote Access Services (communications) Remote Access Services - (RAS) A service provided by Windows NT which allows most of the services which would be available on a network to be accessed over a modem link.  (B-RAS B-RAS Broadband-Remote Access Server ) for xDSL and LMDS (Local Multipoint Distribution Service) A digital wireless transmission system that works in the 28 GHz range in the U.S. and 24-40 GHz overseas. It requires line of sight between transmitter and receiving antenna, which can be from one to four miles apart  access.

"Unisphere's ERX Edge Routing Switch met our stringent requirements -- offering a powerful combination of carrier-class IP routing with value-added functionality. With its integrated VPN (Virtual Private Network) A private network that is configured within a public network (a carrier's network or the Internet) in order to take advantage of the economies of scale and management facilities of large networks.  and B-RAS support, the ERX will play an important part in our future services expansion," said Mr. Alan Aked, general manager of Argus Telecommunications.

"We're very pleased to extend our relationship with Argus Telecommunications into the exciting IP services arena," said Paul Lazarou, executive director, Information and Communications, Siemens Ltd. "The deployment of Unisphere's ERX, with its ASIC-based forwarding and carrier-class design, will allow Argus to support its demanding video-over-IP rollout, as well as deliver winning IP services to its existing customers. The ERX deployment builds on an already successful rollout of a Siemens ATM-based fiber optic network by Argus Telecommunications between Dungog, Scone Scone (skn), village, Perth and Kinross, central Scotland. Old Scone, west of the modern village of New Scone, was the repository of the Coronation Stone (see under coronation) and the , Lithgow, Goulburn and Nowra."

About the ERX

Unisphere Solutions' ERX edge router delivers the next-generation IP infrastructure that allows world-class service providers to deploy high-speed Internet connections and value-added IP services to both businesses and consumers. The ERX product family provides wire-speed performance on all interfaces, sophisticated routing capabilities, carrier-class reliability and high capacity port density. The ERX also offers a number of new revenue-generating service policies such as IP Quality of Service (QoS), Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) and Service Level Agreements (SLAs).

Unisphere's ERX family includes two models - the high capacity ERX-1400 and the mid-range ERX-700. The ERX-1400 provides scalable capacity for tens of thousands of users, making it ideal for service providers that operate high capacity points-of-presence (PoPs). Its modular, 14-slot chassis features a wide range of interface options, including T1/E1, T3/E3, channelized Refers to an architecture that transmits data in channels. It often refers to the 64 Kbps channels in T1 lines, which were originally developed to handle digitized voice streams (TDM). See TDM.  and unchannelized OC3/STM-1, OC12/STM-4, and Fast/Gigabit Ethernet. The ERX-700, designed for applications that require mid-range capacity, has the same features and performance of the ERX-1400 in a more economical 7-slot package.
