"The dynamics of today's competitive landscape are changing dramatically, which creates new opportunities for carriers and service providers looking to embrace emerging technologies and offer differentiated services Offerings that can be classified by type, or quality, of service. For example, a differentiated services network could prioritize real time traffic for a higher fee. ," said Dana Rasmussen, vice president of product management, Unisphere Solutions. "The ODSI initiative is significant because it will alleviate interoperability issues, enabling carriers and service providers to choose vendor partners based solely on their ability to provide the best solution, without concerns of network integration. Unisphere looks forward to contributing to the ODSI initiative by adding our expertise in open, converged network solutions."

Focused on opening the interface to the next generation optical network, the ODSI initiative will help drive innovation in service creation and delivery of high-speed optical networks. The group will select and apply extensions to recognized industry interfaces and protocols, conduct interoperable solutions testing, and promote technical recommendations to the appropriate industry standards organizations A standards organization, also sometimes referred to as a standards body, a standards development organization or SDO (depending on what is being referenced), is any entity whose primary activities are developing, coordinating, promulgating, revising, amending, .

The ODSI coalition consists of networking vendors and service providers, including:

Unisphere Solutions will utilize ODSI capabilities on its router products to dynamically allocate bandwidth through an optical network. Dynamic bandwidth-on-demand capabilities have many applications in next generation networks. ODSI is particularly useful in conjunction with Multiprotocol Label Switching (networking) Multiprotocol Label Switching - (MPLS) A packet switching protocol developed by the IETF. Initially developed to improve switching speed, other benefits are now seen as being more important.  (MPLS (1) (MultiProtocol Lambda Switching) The earlier name for GMPLS. See GMPLS.

(2) (MultiProtocol Label Switching) A standard from the IETF for including routing information in the packets of an IP network.
). Unisphere will combine these two technologies together to offer its customers unique MPLS-based traffic engineering capabilities that require dynamic assignment and modification of bandwidth through an optical network.

Optical Domain Service Interconnect (ODSI) is an open, industry-wide initiative inaugurated by Sycamore Networks in cooperation with a diverse group of service providers and networking vendors. ODSI represents a coalition of networking professionals with a common interest in selecting, applying and promoting the open interfaces and signaling protocols It is a protocol used to identify signaling encapsulation. Signaling is used to identify the state of connection between telephones or VOIP terminals ( IP telephone or PCs or VoWLAN units ). List of signaling protocols:
  • QSIG
  • H.225.0
  • Session Initiation Protocol (SIP)
  • H.
that will allow higher-layer service networks to effectively interoperate with an evolving and dynamic optical network core. Responding to industry needs, the ODSI coalition represents a collaborative effort to open the interface to the next generation optical network and help drive innovation in service creation and delivery.
