Unisphere Networks' Announces Second Order for its Edge Routing Switch from Korea Telecom as it Continues its Quest to Build One of the World's Largest Broadband Networks.
SEOUL, Korea--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 25, 2000
Unisphere Networks, Inc., a leading provider of next-generation voice and data products for communications service providers, announced today that Korea Telecom (NYSE: KTC) has placed a second order for Unisphere's ERX-1400 Edge Routing Switch with Subscriber Access Feature Pack(TM). In June, Unisphere announced Korea Telecom's plans to deploy the ERX-1400 to terminate more than 1.6 million Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) customers by the end of this year (see Unisphere's June 6 announcement). To reach its goal, Korea Telecom, the seventh largest telecommunications company worldwide, has purchased additional ERXs to achieve one of the largest Broadband Remote Access (BRAS) deployments in the world.
Unlike other DSL access concentration products available today, Unisphere's ERX combines subscriber management functions with Tier One routing and IP Quality of Service (QoS) to enable service providers like Korea Telecom to deliver new IP services to their DSL subscribers, without the need for an adjunct product. Korea Telecom's DSL customers benefit from wire-speed performance, IP service support and full Internet routing functionality.
In its initial ERX deployment, Korea Telecom realized savings in capital investment and simplified network management, while also having the ability to support up to 32,000 concurrent DSL subscribers from a single platform.
"The ERX has allowed us to conserve point-of-presence (PoP) space while supporting more subscribers on a single platform than other products in the market. This translates into a rapid return on our investment," said Mr. B. K. Kim, director, Internet Business Unit, Korea Telecom. "We are on track to fulfill the goals we've set for the company and Unisphere's ERX is a major contributor to our success. The ERX has provided us with a solid, dependable platform that continues to meet our high expectations and network demands."
"Unisphere is very proud to continue serving as Korea Telecom's primary network vendor," said Adam Judd, vice president, Asia Pacific, Unisphere Networks, Inc. "When a customer such as Korea Telecom places a second order, it speaks volumes about their level of satisfaction with our product and customer support. We can explain the multi-faceted capabilities of our edge router, but when a customer puts the product to the test, deploys it and then comes back to us for more, it reinforces our confidence that we provide one of the most complete portfolios of edge network services. We look forward to our continued success with Korea Telecom."
About the ERX
Unisphere Networks' ERX edge router delivers the next-generation IP infrastructure that allows world-class service providers to deploy high-speed Internet connections and value-added IP services to both businesses and consumers. The ERX product family provides wire-speed performance, sophisticated routing capabilities, carrier-class reliability and high capacity port density.
Unisphere's ERX family includes two models - the high capacity ERX-1400 and the mid-range ERX-700. The ERX-1400 provides scalable capacity for tens of thousands of users, making it ideal for service providers that operate high capacity points-of-presence (PoPs). Its modular, 14-slot chassis features a wide range of interface options, including T1/E1, T3/E3, channelized and unchannelized OC3/STM-1, OC12/STM-4, and Fast/Gigabit Ethernet. The ERX-700, designed for applications that require mid-range capacity, has the same features and performance of the ERX-1400 in a more economical 7-slot package.
