Union merger a non-issue for industry (merger of the Service Employees International Union and the National health and Human Service Employees Union).

The proposed merger of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU SEIU Service Employees International Union

,) whose Local 32B-32J provides the majority of workers for building owners, and Local 1199 of the National Health and Human Service Employees Union, probably won't affect the operations of the real estate industry, says James F. Berg, executive vice president of the Realty realty n. a short form of "real estate." (See: real estate)

"I don't see that it would have any affect on [tactics], at least not in the foreseeable future," Berg said. "I don't know Don't know (DK, DKed)

what political affect it might have on Gus [Bevona, the Local 32B-32J's president], but from a bargaining standpoint for us, I don't see any change. They have different contracts, different interests and it's a different industry," he noted of the hospital and health care workers.

Local 32B-32J represents 60,000 handy-persons, doormen elevator operators and other building maintenance workers who provide services to both residential and commercial buildings. The RAB represents the largest commercial owners, and with a total of 4,000 member buildings, 3,000 are residential properties in Northern New Jersey, Suffolk, Nassau and New York City New York City: see New York, city.

As to future strike threats, Berg admits he does not know what kind of support could arise from the new combination, which would create a union with 320,000 employees in New York New York, state, United States

Other SEIU locals include the New York Public Employees Federation, which represents 52,000 state workers; District 1115, representing 14,000 nursing home workers; and Local 74, representing 8,000 public school workers.

It was just two years ago that Local 32B-32J workers went on strike against commercial building owners, only to have the wrath of the Blizzard blizzard, winter storm characterized by high winds, low temperatures, and driving snow; according to the official definition given in 1958 by the U.S. Weather Bureau, the winds must exceed 35 mi (56 km) per hr and the temperature 20°F; (−7°C;) or lower.  of '95 descend on the Big Apple.

After weeks of shoveling around the strikers, a contract was negotiated with the intervention of Randy Levine, then baseball negotiator and a current Deputy Mayor, who was brought in at Mayor Rudolph Giuliani's request to bring the parties to an agreement.

That commercial contract expires at the end of this year, when Berg said negotiations will begin once again.
