Union makes case for fire station.

Byline: Edward Russo The Register-Guard

Using a life and death example, Eugene's firefighters union on Wednesday pressed its case to put a crew in a north Eugene fire station that now has only paramedics.

Doris Cary, who lives on Riverwalk Loop near Valley River Village, had a cardiac arrest cardiac arrest

in her home on the morning of Jan. 4. Two paramedics stationed at the Valley River fire station on Goodpasture Island Road responded in an ambulance within minutes, but so did a fire engine crew that normally is at the station for about an hour each day, between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m.

Cary, a retired registered nurse, and her husband, Mike, say the extra help provided by the three firefighters helped save her life. "All five people worked very, very hard," Mike Cary said.

The Carys were at fire department headquarters on Wednesday to thank the firefighters and paramedics that got Doris Cary's heart beating again. They also thanked the 911 dispatcher Software that determines what pending tasks should be done next and assigns the available resources to accomplish it. Staffing at Valley River Fire Station 9 has been an issue for three years, ever since the fire department shifted the engine and its crew to a Santa Clara station Santa Clara Station may refer to:

.

The Eugene Firefighters Association opposed the move and continues to lobby the city's budget committee and City Council to bring an engine and crew back to the station.

Assistant City Manager Jim Carlson said the city's next budget is still being developed but it could contain a $375,000 request to pay for firefighters at the Valley River station, which would cover April, May and June of next year.

But firefighters association president Gary Nauta said residents cannot afford to wait until next year. If a fire or another emergency occurs in the Valley River area, fire crews from Sheldon station or downtown must respond, adding minutes to time that it takes for help to arrive.

He cited a December 2004 fire department report that analyzed an·a·lyze

emergency response times throughout the city and recommended putting an engine back at Station 9.

"The city has the money," Nauta said. "When it comes to life and death matters, they need to make this a priority."

said the department is providing "adequate coverage" in the area. "Any increased coverage would be up to the budget committee and the City Council. The budget committee and council also will hear from the Cal Young Neighborhood Association A neighborhood association is a group of residents, sometimes organized as 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, who take on problems or organize activities within a neighborhood. At a Jan. 27 meeting, about 125 residents agreed with association president John Brown that restaffing the station is a top priority for the area. Budget committee members "will hear from the neighborhood loud and clear," Brown said.
