Donald B. Shea, president of the Rubber Manufacturers Association, announced that Datwyler Rubber & Plastics, Marion, SC, has become a member of the association's General Products Group. The RMA has joined with 23 other organizations in a letter sent to Majority Leader Senator Trent Lott (R-MISS), Senator John Breaux (D-LA) and members of the Senate Commerce Committee to express its strong support of S.414, the Ocean Shipping Reform Act of 1997. The act would provide ocean carriers more flexibility when contracting with shippers for ocean transportation, protect U.S. shippers from disclosure to their foreign competitors, privatize the tariff information publishing function, and reform the licensing and bonding requirements for ocean freight forwarders.

Ferro's Plymouth, IN operation, part of the Liquid Coatings and Dispersions Division, was awarded the 1997 State of Indiana Quality Improvement Award in recognition of outstanding leadership and achievement in several quality-related areas. A membrane-based monomer recovery process for polyolefin manufacturing plants, developed by Membrane Technology and Research, and sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Industrial Technologies, was named the winner of Chemical Engineering Magazine's 34th Kirkpatrick Chemical Engineering Achievement Award. The award-winning process allows the monomer feedstocks, ethylene and propylene, to be recovered easily and inexpensively from polymer manufacturing waste gas streams.
