Unilever Agrees Sale of Plant Breeding International to Monsanto for Approximately 522 Million U.S. Dollars.


NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 15, 1998--Unilever announced today that it has agreed to sell Plant Breeding plant breeding, science of altering the genetic pattern of plants in order to increase their value. Increased crop yield is the primary aim of most plant-breeding programs; advantages of the hybrids and new varieties developed include adaptation to new agricultural  International Cambridge Limited (PBIC PBIC Pedestrian and Bicycle Information Center ) to Monsanto Company, for approximately 522 million dollars cash.

The transaction includes PBIC operations in Scotland and France together with PBI PBI protein-bound iodine.

The U.K. government has been informed of the proposed sale. Completion is expected on July 16, although the transfer of PBI Saatzucht will be deferred pending regulatory clearance from the German competition authorities.

In April this year, Unilever announced its intention to sell PBIC as part of its continuing focus on consumer goods consumer goods

PBIC was formed in 1987 when Unilever acquired the breeding and applied science resources of the Plant Breeding Institute and the National Seed Development Organisation.
