MYRTLE BEACH, S.C.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 18, 2002

UniTrends Software Corporation, a leading developer of enterprise-wide cross-platform backup, recovery and data protection products and services, today unveiled its Solar Shield(TM) crash recovery system for Solaris.

Solar Shield provides complete crash recovery for Solaris computers, enabling an administrator to fully and rapidly recover without reinstalling the Solaris Operating System operating system (OS)

Software that controls the operation of a computer, directs the input and output of data, keeps track of files, and controls the processing of computer programs.

"With Solar Shield, UniTrends extends its 15 years of expertise in Unix crash recovery products to the Solaris platform, giving Solaris users the same safety and peace of mind as our existing customer base," said UniTrends president Steve Schwartz Dr. Schwartz founded Unitrends in 1989 in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Schwartz is considered the initial developer of a data recovery and restoration technique known as bare-metal restore and is recognized in the software industry as the developer of CTAR (Compressing Tape Archiver) and . "The overwhelming market acceptance of our disaster recovery products has indicated that users welcome simple, powerful and reliable solutions for otherwise crippling crip·ple

Solar Shield completely recovers the system from the last master backup, eliminating the need for additional layers of disaster recovery schemes. Solar Shield also doubles as a disk optimizer A utility program that defragments a hard disk. See defragment.  by reloading Reloading

Solar Shield's advanced comprehensive diagnostic and test features ensure that when disaster strikes, recovery will proceed smoothly. The diagnostic tool can also be used to test valuable IT resources such as hard drives, file systems, network connections and tape drives, and ensures all proper drivers are loaded and functional.

Solar Shield is harnessed by an easy-to-use interface that allows novice administrators to perform a totally automated restore with a few keystrokes and mouse clicks. Advanced administrators will appreciate the flexible options and control over individual file systems, file and directory exclusions and shell mode. Available as a modular client/server product, Solar Shield's server module restores a computer that is directly attached to a tape drive, while Solar Shield's client module restores a computer that is networked to a Solar Shield server.

"Just a week after deciding to demo Solar Shield, we lost one of our servers, along with the information stored on its hard drive," said Craig Strom, MIS Manager at Lakedale Telephone Company. "We were able to restore everything using Solar Shield, and with the help of UniTrends, the machine was fully functional in a matter of an hour. This saved us at least a week of having to first restore the server and then manually re-enter re·en·ter also re-en·ter
