Uni-Cast, Miller, Vestshell and Aristo-Cast named winners in 2005 Investment Casting Contest.


Four winners were named in the Investment Casting investment casting

Precision casting for forming metal shapes with minutely precise details. Casting bronze or precious metals typically involves several steps, including forming a mold around the sculptured form; detaching the mold (in two or more sections); coating its
 Institute's 2005 Casting Contest, which recognized superior castings in the aerospace airframe, aerospace engine, industrial/commercial and military/defense categories.

Uni-Cast Inc., Londonderry, N.H., won the Aerospace Airframe Award for its air inlet scoop for electronic cooling in a fighter aircraft pod. The 17 x 18 x 19-in. (43.2 x 45.7 x 48.3-cm) aluminum component was produced initially as a rapid prototype while UniCast concurrently developed the production injection mold.

Miller Castings Inc., Whittier, Calif., won the Aerospace Engine Award for its inlet gearbox casing of 17-4 PH stainless steel stainless steel: see steel.

Vestshell Inc., Montreal North, Quebec, Canada, took the Military/Defense Award for its military vehicle suspension alloy steel component. The casting is used with five other complex castings to connect the suspension to the hull of the armored personnel carrier.

Aristo-Cast Inc., Almont, Mich., won the Industrial/Commercial Casting Award with its aluminum robotic gridlock Gridlock
