Understanding the New Partnership for Africa's Development.This publication provides an overview of the aims and objectives of Nepad, and analyses its main strengths and potential weaknesses. It agreed that Nepad has placed African economics and African governance on the global agenda. The main challenges identified by Diescho are the lack of emphasis in changing the colonial mindset mind·set or mind-set n. 1. A fixed mental attitude or disposition that predetermines a person's responses to and interpretations of situations. 2. An inclination or a habit. of both Europeans and Africans vis-a-vis Africa's economic situation; the resistance against peer review of good governance The terms governance and good governance are increasingly being used in development literature. Governance describes the process of decision-making and the process by which decisions are implemented (or not implemented). from the side of Africa's 'dictators'; the widespread politics of patronage which limits the development of expertise in economic thinking and planning; the undemocratic development of Nepad by a small group of African leaders without consultation with civil society; and the disputed leadership role of South Africa South Africa, Afrikaans Suid-Afrika, officially Republic of South Africa, republic (2005 est. pop. 44,344,000), 471,442 sq mi (1,221,037 sq km), S Africa. under the mantle of Mbeki's 'African Renaissance'. The publication concludes that "despite the main challenges ahead, Nepad still offers the best hope for Africa at this point in time," and calls for a consciousness-raising effort by all political leaders to inform citizens of the major changes envisaged by the ushering in Noun 1. ushering in - the introduction of something new; "it signalled the ushering in of a new era" first appearance, introduction, debut, entry, launching, unveiling - the act of beginning something new; "they looked forward to the debut of their new product line" of the African Union African Union (AU), international organization established in 2002 by the nations of the former Organization of African Unity (OAU). The AU is the successor organization to the OAU, with greater powers to promote African economic, social, and political integration, and Nepad.
