That being said, I present Under China: Under is the front and China is the coverage. This package is derived from a 4-3 configuration but can be adapted to a multitude of defensive structures.

Diag. 1: Under China

Under China is an 8-man front with man-to-man coverage based upon the backfield set. China is a weak-side rotated coverage with the Free Safety in the box. The secondary aligns in a Cover 2 shell with the Free Safety rocking down pre-snap.

ST--Stud: 5-technique to the closed side.

T--Tackle: 1-technique to the closed side.

N--Nose: 3-technique to the open side.

E--End: 5-technique to the open side.

W--Will: Backer (9-technique) to the closed side.

M--Mike: Align B+.

S--Sam: Align A-.

FS--Free Safety: Align stack with End.

SS--Strong Safety: Align in the hole.

C--Corners: Match coverage on wide outs.

Following are gap responsibilities for runs to the closed and open side:

Diag. 2: Flow Run

Will--Box D+ gap. Will takes on all blocks with his inside shoulder and turns in all running plays.

Mike--Responsible for B+ gap. He turns in all running plays to Sam. Should the ball track wider than B+, he will expand to match the back's angle.

Sam--Quick to B+. Mike will force the run back to Sam. The beauty of this defense is it allows Sam to aggressively attack play-side because the FS has cutback cut·back

Sam--Tracks the ball from A- to C-. If the ball attacks A-, he will spill the ball to the FS.

Free Safety--Tracks the ball from A- to C-. If the ball attacks A-, the Sam will force the ball to him. If the ball shows in C-, the FS is the force player. He will turn the ball in.

Front-side Corner--Has secondary support. He will not come up until the ball crosses the line of scrimmage.

Backside Corner--Has cutback to cutoff.

Strong Safety--Fills the alley.

PASS RESPONSIBILITIES

One of the major benefits of this package is it effectiveness against play-action passes, particularly in short yardage situations.

Diag. 4: Base Pass Responsibilities

Will--Has the Y man to man. The corners take the wide outs man while the SS takes the hole. Mike, Sam, and the FS trio coverage on the two running backs. Back distribution will determine which defender has which back.

In Diag. 5 the Mike will take the F, Sam has the T, and the FS will plug.

The plugger zones over the ball at a depth of 8 to 10 yards and looks for crossers. The plugger can also be game planned to spy on an athletic quarterback.

Diag. 6 shows the FS on the F, Sam takes the T, while Mike becomes the plugger.
